Cirò, known as the "City of Wine and the Calendar," is perched on a hillside at 351 meters above sea level and has ancient roots, having been known by various names throughout the centuries, including Ypsicron, Krimisa, and Paternum. The village is home to four museums: the Archaeological Museum, the Wine and Peasant Civilization Museum, the Astronomical Museum dedicated to Aloysius Lilius, the reformer of the Gregorian Calendar, and the Alchemy Museum dedicated to Janus Lacinio. Among the historical points of interest, the Carafa Castle, the Cannone Bastion, the Birthplace and the Church of San Nicodemo stand out.
The Cirò region, which gently slopes towards the sea, is ideal for viticulture due to its favorable climate. In 1969, the wine produced in the area was awarded Denomination of Controlled Origin (DOC), featuring native grape varieties such as Gaglioppo for red wines and Greco for whites. Cirò is also renowned for its rich culinary tradition, where the pepper, or "pipi," takes center stage in typical dishes like peppers with potatoes, grilled sausage, salted cod, and anchovies. Among the traditional sweets, "chinuliddi" (cookies filled with grape must), "crispeddi a vento," and Christmas treats like "tardiddi" and "crustuli" are particularly notable.
